Remote Work Augmented by AR & VR
I read Mark Zuckerberg’s post on Facebook outlining his focus for the next decade. Mark being at the forefront of technology, I’m sure has a pretty good bird’s eye view of where technology is headed. Also, considering the fact that he runs Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp, he’ll have a strong pull on the world wherever he turns his technology beast towards.
What really caught my attention was the section on “The Next Computing Platform.” He basically says that because certain cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, etc. are where the jobs are, people flock to those cities. When they do, costs skyrocket across the board from housing to food, reducing the quality of living for everyone.
Because of these issues, he believes decoupling opportunity and geography would be a great solution. People could work from anywhere with the help of augmented and virtual reality, making people feel connected with other people regardless of where they are.
Taking Advantage of Change
There are a couple of implications and things I’m thinking about after reading Mark’s thoughts on the next 10 years:
- I believe this bodes well for Stationgeek/Minidesk. I believe there is more opportunity than I first thought of focusing on remote work.
- Housing in other parts of the U.S. will rise in value faster than major cities. I plan to convert a van into a mobile office and tour the U.S. looking at land and housing in each state to see where to invest.
- I’m seeing also a burgeoning of a no-code movement. Tools are being developed so that you don’t need to be a developer to build technology companies. I believe no-code will increase the number of entrepreneurs because it lowers the learning curve and barriers to starting a business.
- Remote work will increase as companies adopt the remote work lifestyle.
I’m more excited about exploring Stationgeek/Minidesk/Muze.
